When you put on a show, the photos sell the next one: to sponsors, to talent, and to the audience deciding whether to buy a ticket. You need the performer at the peak, the crowd going with them, and the scale of the night in a single frame. Stage lighting makes that hard, and that's where experience shows.

I've photographed live music for years, from DJ sets and festival headliners to student choirs and dance performances. My photojournalism training means I anticipate the peak instead of chasing it, and I work stage light without flash so the show looks like the show.

A great performance gallery tells both halves of the story. I work the front of the stage for the performer shots, move to the sides and back for the wide views that show how big the night was, and go into the crowd for the faces and the hands in the air. At MSU Denver's Roadrunners After Dark, the university's biggest outdoor student festival, that meant a Red Bull DJ stage and a headliner concert that kept going through the rain.

Performances happen inside other events, too: a student choir opening the ACE Scholarships luncheon at the Seawell Ballroom, or dancers at the Denver Broncos holiday party at Empower Field. I cover those moments with the same care as a headliner.

Stage light is the hardest light in event photography: bright spots on the performer, deep shadows everywhere else, and colors that shift every few seconds. Outdoor festival stages add weather and dusk. Theatrical venues like the Ellie Caulkins Opera House and rooms like the Seawell Ballroom add a dark house and a bright stage.

I shoot without flash during performances, time my frames to the lighting, and keep the crowd in the story. The result is a gallery that looks like the night felt, not a set of blurry phone photos from the back of the room.
