A nonprofit event lives twice: once in the room, and again in every piece of follow-up that asks people to give. The program is where the money gets raised, so I cover it closely: the student or family story, the keynote, the paddle raise or pledge moment, and the faces in the audience while it happens. Those reaction shots are what make a donor feel the room again when they open your email.

Around the program I capture arrivals and check-in, sponsor signage, table details and pledge cards, volunteers at work, and candid conversations between board members and donors. At the ACE Scholarships Women's Luncheon at the Seawell Ballroom, that meant a student choir, five mothers sharing their stories, and a keynote from Dr. Tiffany Moon, all in one program.

Most Denver nonprofit events happen in rooms built for banquets: the Seawell Ballroom at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, hotel ballrooms like the Hyatt Regency Aurora-Denver, and event halls like Mile High Station. Each has its own challenge: big rooms with a lit stage and a dark audience, window light that shifts through a lunch program, and tight aisles between rounds of ten.

I work those rooms quietly and without flash wherever I can, so the program keeps its focus and your guests stay in the moment. At the Community College of Aurora's annual luncheon, the program ran from a student spoken word opener through several community speakers to a paddle raise that closed at $330,000, for a room of more than 400 guests.
