Community events are loud, crowded, and over fast. The step show, the award presentation, the crowd singing along, the kid on a parent's shoulders. None of it waits for a photographer to get into position, and none of it happens twice. That's exactly what photojournalism trained me for.

I came up shooting news on deadline, where you anticipate the moment or you miss it. At community and cultural events I move with the crowd, stay out of the way of the program, and come home with the photos that show your community what they were part of.

Cultural events carry meaning beyond the program: traditions, dress, music, and the people who keep them alive. I photograph them with respect, ask when I'm unsure, and work with your organizers on anything that shouldn't be photographed.

At MSU Denver's annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Breakfast at Mile High Station, that meant the table details before the room filled, the arrivals, the MLK Peace Awards, and a keynote conversation with Erika Alexander. At Meet the Greeks in the Tivoli Turnhalle, it meant fifteen Greek organizations, recruitment tables, strolls, and a full step show in a 19th-century brick hall.

Community events rarely happen in a ballroom. They're in event halls like Mile High Station, historic spaces like the Tivoli Turnhalle on the Auraria Campus, arenas like the Denver Coliseum, and outdoor sites where the weather gets a vote. I've photographed a 5A state tournament basketball game at the Denver Coliseum and FOX's Big Noon Kickoff at CU Boulder, and both taught the same lesson: crowds move fast, so position matters more than gear.

Outdoors, I plan around the sun and the schedule. Indoors, I work in available light as much as possible so the room keeps its atmosphere. Either way, travel within 60 miles of Denver is included.

I started my career as a photojournalist, working on deadline for newspapers and wire services where the only option was to get the shot right the first time. That training never left. I've covered civic breakfasts, cultural celebrations, and community gatherings across Denver for years.
