What to expect from an event photographer

I had the privilege of photographing the Broncos Honors Awards at the Mission Ballroom in Denver’s RINO district, a stunning venue that set the stage for an evening of celebration and recognition. I began by capturing the details of the event space. As guests arrived, I moved on to the cocktail hour, capturing the energy of the mingling crowd before the program kicked off. The anticipation grew as attendees made their way to their seats, and soon, the speakers took the stage, setting the tone for the evening. Following an insightful panel discussion, it was time for the highlight of the evening: the awards presentation. From heartfelt speeches to proud moments, the room was filled with emotion as each honoree was celebrated for their contributions.

Exterior shots and details

Capturing every detail of the event, even before the guests arrive, is essential for telling a complete story. Photographing the venue and its surroundings before it's filled with people offers a unique opportunity to showcase the space in its purest form. It allows you to highlight the decor, lighting, and overall ambiance without distractions. By arriving early, you can capture the essence of the setting, and later, when the guests are present, you can shoot the same scenes with energy and movement, creating a powerful contrast that highlights the transformation of the space. This approach not only preserves the atmosphere but also tells the full narrative of the event from start to finish.

Understanding stage lighting

When it comes to event photography, I prefer to avoid using flash whenever possible to ensure the focus remains on the natural ambiance without distractions. That said, during cocktail hour, flash is essential—it helps add that extra pop to the images and brings the scene to life. However, when the program begins, and speakers or award recipients take the stage, I avoid using flash to maintain the attention on them. My goal is to be a quiet observer, capturing the moment without drawing attention to myself. I’ve invested in the right gear and expertise to document these events without the need for flash, ensuring a seamless experience for both guests and hosts.

Verticle and horizontal images

It’s important to capture both vertical and horizontal images at an event to provide a wide range of options for future use. This approach ensures there’s flexibility for everything from websites and email campaigns to social media and promotional materials. By having a variety of orientations, you can tailor the images to fit different formats, making them more versatile and impactful across various platforms.
