A headshot is a tight, clean portrait of your face and shoulders that tells people what you look like. Personal branding photos are a wider library of you working, speaking, and living your professional life that tells people what you do and what it's like to work with you. If you need one current photo for LinkedIn, a company directory, or a speaker bio, book a headshot. If your face is your business and you need images to fill a website, social media, and marketing for the year, book a branding photoshoot.
I shoot both headshots and personal branding sessions in Denver, so I have no reason to push you toward the bigger package. Some people who ask about a branding session really need a great headshot, and some people who book a headshot would get more out of a library. This guide lays out the difference, a side-by-side comparison, and an honest way to decide.
What is a headshot?
A headshot is a portrait framed from about the chest up, with you looking at the camera, on a simple or softly blurred background, in flattering and consistent light. Its job is identification and a strong first impression. Headshots go on LinkedIn profiles, company team pages, conference badges, bar and professional directories, bylines, and speaker bio thumbnails.
A headshot session is short and focused. With me, a Quick Update Session is 15 minutes, one look, and 3 edited images for $275, and a Standard Headshot Session is 30 minutes, up to two looks, and 7 edited images for $425. For companies, I bring lighting and a backdrop to your Denver office and photograph the whole team. Details are on my Denver headshot photographer page.
Is a headshot the same as a portrait?
A headshot is a type of portrait. "Portrait" is the broad term for any photograph where a person is the subject, at any distance, in any setting. A headshot is the tight, head-and-shoulders version made for professional identification. Environmental portraits, which show you in your own space and still looking at the camera, sit between the two, and they're the backbone of a good branding library.
What are personal branding photos?
Personal branding photos are a set of images built to tell your professional story: environmental portraits, candid working shots, you with clients or on stage, details of your tools and space, and frames in the Denver locations where you work. The goal isn't one perfect picture. It's range, so you have the right image for a website banner, an About page, a LinkedIn post, a newsletter, and a press request.
With me, a Personal Branding Session is 60 minutes with multiple looks and 25 edited images for $725, and the Full Branding Experience is 2 hours with unlimited outfit changes, multiple locations or setups, creative direction, and up to 60 edited images for $1,225. I wrote a longer guide on what a personal branding photoshoot is and how it works, including a shot list.

When a headshot is all you need
A branding shoot you never use is money wasted. A headshot is the right choice when:
- You work inside a larger company and marketing handles the brand imagery. You need to look current and professional, not fill a content calendar.
- Your photo lives in one or two places: your LinkedIn profile, the team page, a badge.
- You're job hunting and want a strong, current profile photo fast.
- You're outfitting a whole team. Consistent headshots across a company matter more than range. I do half-day team coverage for up to about 25 people and full days for up to about 60.
- You just need an update. New role, new haircut, old photo. That's a 15-minute session.
When you need a personal branding photoshoot instead
A branding photoshoot pays for itself when your face is doing the selling. Book one when:
- You run your own business or practice, and clients are hiring you, not a company.
- You post regularly on LinkedIn or Instagram and keep recycling the same three photos.
- You're launching something: a website, a book, a podcast, a course, a speaking season.
- Your clients buy how you work with them. Coaches, therapists, stylists, realtors, and consultants all fall here.
- Event organizers and press ask you for photos, and you have one headshot to send.
- Your website still uses stock photos anywhere a real photo of you should be.
Count the places your photo appears in a normal month: profiles, posts, emails, slides, listings. One or two, book a headshot. Ten or more, you need a branding library.
What headshots and branding photos have in common
Whichever you choose, the things that make a photo worth using are the same. Both need a photographer who can get you out of your own head, which is where my photojournalism background does the work: I watch for the expression between the poses instead of manufacturing one. With me, both kinds of sessions include:
- Fully retouched images that still look like you
- Web and print resolution files
- A private online gallery, active for 12 months and easy to share
- A personal and professional use license, with commercial advertising use available on request
- A prep guide before the session
- On-location shooting across the Denver metro
- Additional edited images at $30 each
One more overlap worth knowing: a branding session produces clean headshot-style frames along with everything else. If you're leaning toward branding, tell me on the planning call that you also need a new profile photo and I'll make sure you leave with one.
Headshot vs branding photos: common questions
Can I use a branding photo as my headshot?
Yes, if it's framed like one: you, looking at the camera, face clearly lit, background not competing. That's why branding sessions include headshot-style frames.
Which is better for LinkedIn?
Both, in different spots. Your LinkedIn profile photo should be a headshot. Your banner, featured section, and posts are where branding photos earn their keep.
Do I need both a headshot and branding photos?
Rarely as separate sessions. If you book branding, ask for headshot frames. If you book a headshot and later need a library, the branding session can build on it.
What does each cost in Denver?
With me, headshots are $275 to $425 per person, with team pricing for companies, and personal branding sessions are $725 or $1,225. Both include editing, a private gallery, and a personal and professional use license.
Not sure which one fits?
